Edmonton Police continue to seek public’s assistance identifying deceased male; EPS works with RCMP Forensic Art Unit to develop 3D modelled image

$

Edmonton, Alberta – The Edmonton Police Service is releasing a 3D modelled image of a deceased male in the hopes that someone may recognize him.

On Thursday, June 1, 2017, police responded to the report of a body found on the bank of the North Saskatchewan River just south of the Dawson Bridge. Upon arrival, officers located a deceased male.

Since then, investigators with the EPS Missing Persons Unit have been working closely with several partners, including the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton and the RCMP Forensic Art Unit, in an attempt to identify the male.

In July of 2018, an EPS sketch artist used photos of the deceased to create composite drawings of what the male may have looked like. These were provided to the public in a media release; however, attempts to identify him remained unsuccessful.

In the fall of 2019, the Alberta RCMP Missing Persons Unit began working with the EPS on the investigation which they believed was an ideal candidate for 3D modelling. With the help of an anthropologist, an artist and a graphic specialist, a 3D model of the male was created.

“Our sketch artists work primarily with photos and descriptors of the deceased,” says Cst. Craig Gabucci with the EPS Missing Persons Unit. “They do the best they can with the information they receive.”

“The RCMP Forensic Art Unit is able to use information from a variety of sources, including an anthropologist report, skull measurements and photos, resulting in a fairly realistic interpretation of what an individual may have looked like.

“We are grateful for the RCMP’s assistance and are hopeful that these 3D modelled images will help us identify this male.”

The deceased male is described as 5’6” tall and may have had dark brown or black hair. At the time of his discovery, he was wearing dark coloured jeans with a brown, leather belt, a black ¼ zip fleece sweater, a dark brown or black jacket and brown, leather strapped sandals with black soles.

The male was also carrying a unique silver alarm clock which investigators believe someone may recognize.

At this time, officers continue to believe that the male’s death is not suspicious in nature.

Anyone with information about the deceased male is asked to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250.

Calgary, Alberta – A nuclear gauge stolen from an SUV with a variety of other tools could pose a health risk to the person who took it and anyone else who has prolonged contact with it. We are trying to locate the device so it can be safely returned to its rightful owner.

Nuclear gauges are devices used in construction and other industrial sectors to perform measurements and tests on materials. The stolen device, a Troxler 3430 model, contains a small amount of radioactive material. A person may start to experience effects from the radiation after 24 hours of exposure to a gauge that is not stored properly. Tampering with the device can also expose a person to radiation.

The stolen device, a Troxler 3430 model, contains a small amount of radioactive material.

Anyone who handles the stolen device should leave it sealed in its case to prevent exposure. The device does not produce enough radiation to be a risk to the broader public.

The gauge was stolen with other tools while the vehicle was parked in the community of Woodbine between 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 28, 2020, and 7:50 a.m. the next morning. In total, over $23,000 worth of tools were stolen.

“Breaking and entering is a high-risk behaviour and this incident really just highlights that fact,” said Inspector Michael Watterston, Commander of District 6 with the Calgary Police Service. “People do not know what dangers are posed by another person’s property and they might unknowingly take something that is hazardous if not handled properly.”

Police note increase in speeding, concerning driving behaviours

$
0

Lethbridge, Alberta – Following an increase in speeding and other concerning driving behaviours, police are urging motorists to slow down and obey the rules of the road.

The issue was brought to light Wednesday evening during a public meeting of the Lethbridge Police Commission when Chief Scott Woods addressed several inquiries received from citizens concerned about the ongoing use of photo radar during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Woods explained to Commission the police service has observed less vehicle traffic on local roads which has resulted in an increase in unsafe driving practices, including stunting and racing. Police have also noted higher rates of speed for the tickets being issued, which is likely attributed to less traffic volume and drivers taking liberties as a result.

Lethbridge Police
File Photo

To date in 2020, police have issued five tickets to drivers clocked at going more than 50 km/h over the limit. By comparison there were no tickets for 50km/h speed violations issued in all of 2019.

“Road safety has always been important and even more so right now with the increase in pedestrian and bicycle traffic as more people are outside enjoying the warm weather while we continues to navigate the restrictions imposed during the pandemic,” said Woods.

Some of the concerns about photo radar and police continuing to issue tickets during a pandemic noted the practice could have a detrimental effect on some residents given the lay-offs, financial uncertainties and day to day stresses brought on by a litany of restrictions.

Photo radar is used in areas where conventional enforcement is unsafe or ineffective, areas with a history of collisions, speeding problems and other offences, in school, playground and construction zones, areas with high pedestrian traffic as well as areas where the public has expressed concerns related to speeding.

Drivers are responsible for obeying the rules of the road and doing their part to keep our roads safe at all times. Conventional and photo enforcement of traffic offences will not be suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
